Photo Art Blog

Hello Photo Art and Photoshop enthusiasts. I have a blog dedicated to compositing and photo manipulation. In the world of digital photography, the idea of not using all the tools at our disposal is like painting and being limited to one brush and one color. If you’re happy with shots straight out of your camera, then perhaps you don’t need anything but a good printer. On the other hand, if you’re like me and just can’t manage to be at the right place at the right time, then a little manipulation can make a big difference.

There are numerous reasons to enhance or alter your photos. Be assured that most successful photographers make some alterations, even if they display their work as traditional photography. Adjusting contrast and saturation is much too easy not to brighten up the color. But why stop there?

I would never profess that Photoshop is a simple program to learn. I’m sure that even the people that designed it haven’t tried every combination of every feature that it has. Also, I’m sure users have discovered ways to use Photoshop that were never conceived by Adobe. It’s an amazing piece of software.

With that said, come join me on an adventure in learning how to create Art out of Photography. Even after using the program for 10 years, I’m still learning. I have developed some of my own techniques because some of the tutorials I’ve tried were just too daunting, and too cumbersome.

I’m just starting the blog, so please excuse the fact that there aren’t hundreds of tutorials and articles. I’ll get there, so please visit often. In the meantime, take a look at my Photo Art and see if there is anything you’d like to try. If I don’t have an article or tutorial on a particular subject, you can always ask me to add one.

A recent trip to South Dakota allowed me to get some decent shots, but nothing amazing. The weather was decent, light was good, and there were even interesting clouds. However,...

Occasionally I’m faced with a challenge that doesn’t rely on Photoshop. It’s good to try techniques that yield interesting exposures. In painting with light, it’s all about creating the image...

David Mayhew: Pro storm chaser 31 May 2011 | 9:14 am
David Mayhew has an eye on the sky. Weather is the attraction, and photography is reason he chases. Skyscapes are wondrous sights to ponder. You have to be willing...
