Design Criteria: In the creation of any product, from a simple toothbrush to something as complex as a computer, thought must go into the design, which will be influenced by the manufacturing process and available materials. First, criteria must be set so that the engineering process has a goal to achieve, noting the ways to form or shape the materials to be used. In building umPODS, the material must be moldable from a fluid state that will cure to a solid. The resulting solid or end product must meet stringent criteria to insure the structural stability and the durability of the robotically cast unishell. In engineering umPODS, the availability of quality castable material will be essential to the process. Ultra-high strength fiber impregnated concrete will probably be the material of choice, although the formulation may not exist at present. Structural grade concrete will certainly suffice for the interim.

In designing unishell modular permacast optimal detached superstructures (umPODS), the defining criteria fall into several categories. Strength, as with all structures is a top priority. Unishell superstructures must meet more stringent demands to survive fire, earthquakes, flooding, tornados, hurricanes, tsunamis, and other perils of nature and man. To achieve independence from the obligation to purchase peril insurance, umPODS must be nearly indestructible. Durability will be another top priority so that umPODS will remain virtually maintenance free throughout their lifetime. Modular components such as interior walls will be simple to add or to upgrade.
